Title :
Comparison of the effect of the age on carotid artery wall changes using ultrasound echo processing
-
Abstract :
Background & Purpose: This study has been carried out to investigate the effects of age on the features extracted from ultrasound echo signals on healthy individuals of different ages. The purpose of the present study was to find differentiator features of the vessel wall between healthy and diseased individuals. Materials & Methods: The research method was quasi-experimental and the echo signals of carotid arteries of 30 volunteers in three groups of young (under 35 years), middle age (35-50 years) and elderly (over 50 years) were recorded by a research echocardiography device. The echo signals are then processed by Matlab software. First, by considering a suitable window comprising the posterior wall of the carotid artery, the phase difference entropy by using of Hilbert transform and the power spectrum features of the echoes are obtained during consecutive frames. To analyze the data, one way ANOVA and Bonferroni measurements was used at the significant level of P<0.05. Results: Increasing age affected the power spectrum characteristics of echo signals and phase difference entropy (P <0.05). The power spectrum features also decrease by age, and the phase difference entropy increases by age. Conclusion: Regarding the direct relation between the motion of the arterial wall and the phase difference of echo signals, it can be concluded that by studying and analyzing the phase difference of the echo signals, the complexity and irregularity of the motion of the arterial wall increases with increasing age. Also, the energy of echoes decreases over time. It is hoped that these features may be useful in the early detection of atherosclerosis.
